Western Maine Recovery Outings Program

Welcome to Western Maine Recovery Outings, where we bring individuals in recovery from substance use disorder and their supporters together through fun and accessible outdoor experiences.

Our unique program is all about fostering community connectivity and providing a space for personal growth and empowerment!

What We Offer:

Our Recovery Outings program invites participants to join us for a variety of outdoor activities. From cross-country skiing in the winter to kayking down the Androscoggin River in the summer, there’s something for everyone. And the best part? We provide all the necessary equipment at no cost, either through rentals or free items to take home with you at the end of the outing.

Examples of past and future Recovery Outings activities:

  • Hiking
  • Ice skating
  • Snow tubing
  • Fishing
  • Swimming
  • Wilderness survival
  • and more!

How It Works:

Experienced guides and a dedicated “recovery lead” create a safe and supportive environment for our outings. These individuals ensure that everyone feels comfortable, facilitate our acitivity, provide information about the program, and help participants form connections with each other. Transportation assistance can also be provided through shared rides and gas cards, so logistical barriers won’t hold you back. These outings are always free to participants. All you have to do is sign up!

Why It's Important:

Spending time in nature has well-documented physical and mental health benefits. However, many individuals in recovery face challenges in engaging in outdoor activities such as financial constraints, limited social support, or lack of confidence. That’s where we come in. Our program actively addresses these barriers, creating an opportunity where everyone can enjoy the outdoors while building up their self-esteem and community.

Our Impact:

We’ve seen firsthand how our Recovery Outings can transform, inspire, and connect individuals in recovery. Participants gain confidence as they try new activities and develop deeper relationships with the outdoors, their peers in recovery, and themselves. It’s not just about enjoying nature; it’s about personal development and comprehensive wellness.

In February 2023, our Recovery Outings program was featured on an episode of the PBS show, “America Outdoors, Maine: Embrace the Cold.” You can watch the episode here on the PBS website.
