SUMMARY:"Our American Family" Film screening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:There will be a free public showing of the film Our American Family at 6pm on Thursday\, September 12th\, at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. This film shows the experience of a family working through addiction and recovery in a powerful\, intimate and unfiltered way. It clearly portrays how addiction impacts an entire family\, not just the individual who is using substances. \nMaine made headlines earlier this year for being one of 4 states in the country to experience a reduction in drug overdose deaths greater than 15% during 2023. This was the first year-over year decline in 5 years\, and demonstrates important progress to address substance use and overdose deaths. Still\, the state lost 607 lives to overdose last year. While there are fewer overdose deaths\, the number of reported overdoses is still very high; there were nearly 10\,000 reported overdoses in 2023 and a great deal more that went unreported.  \nThere is important work to do in helping people to connect to treatment and recovery so we can build a future with fewer overdoses and more people restored to their families\, lives and communities. A vital first step towards this goal is improving our understanding of what addiction looks like and films like Our American Family can help by showing\, in a radically honest way\, how addiction impacts families. The film will be followed by a short Q&A session with Linda Geragthy\, the mother in the family featured in the film. Free popcorn and drinks will be provided. Please note that the film features strong language and is not recommended for young children.  \nSeptember marks National Recovery Month\, an annual celebration of recovery. The film showing is one of many events hosted by the Western Maine Addiction Recovery Initiative (WMARI) during that month. WMARI operates the HILLS Recovery Center in Norway\, where they connect people to treatment\, services and resources\, host support events and social gatherings\, and champion recovery in Western Maine. WMARI invites you to join this important event\, learn more about addiction and recovery\, and be part of building a stronger\, safer\, brighter future for our communities.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, September 18th\, the Sixth Annual Western Maine Recovery Rally will bring people from across Western Maine together to support and celebrate recovery from addiction. As a part of National Recovery Month\, the rally will be a show of community support for those impacted by substance use\, an opportunity to learn more about addiction and recovery\, and a chance to connect with local resources providing support to those already in or looking for recovery. \nThe Recovery Rally will feature a unified march from downtown Norway\, where people will gather at 11:00 am at Longley Square at 413 Main Street. Free rally t-shirts and signs to carry during the march will be available upon arrival. At 11:30\, the crowd will begin a march\, with police escorts\, to Moore Park in South Paris\, where a rally will be held with free food\, resource tables\, and speakers starting at 1:00 pm. \nSpeakers will share powerful personal stories about how their lives have been impacted by addiction and recovery. Over the history of this event\, rally speakers have demonstrated that substance use impacts every corner of our communities and people from all walks of life. They’ve also shared stories of remarkable strength\, compassion\, and inspiration. Speakers will also include local legislators and legislative representatives. For many attendees\, the speakers are the highlight of this important event. This year we are honored to welcome Jacinta\, the subject of a recent documentary that shines a light on her journey with substance use disorder\, incarceration\, and recovery. \nFollowing the speakers\, the family-friendly celebration will continue with lawn games\, children’s activities (in our new Kid’s Zone*)\, and more. The event will conclude at 3:30 pm\, with transportation to take people back to their vehicles in Norway or the River Valley. This event will be held rain or shine. \nThe event is being coordinated by the Western Maine Addiction Recovery Initiative (WMARI)\, a nonprofit organization devoted to providing a compassionate response to the crisis of substance use in Oxford County and the surrounding area.
